Waipare Bluff Dropout - SH35
Road Construction Highway Remediation

Waipare Bluff Dropout - SH35

The Waipare Bluff Dropout project was a critical component of the TREC alliance, aimed at maintaining connectivity along SH35, a vital route for the Tairawhiti region's communities. The remediation work focused on ensuring the long-term stability of the highway, protecting it against future weather-related disruptions. The repair of Fault ID613 involved the installation of a reinforced engineered fill slope with a rock armour-protected face and enhanced drainage. The failure was caused by an under slip during Cyclone Gabrielle, which left a 6.6m high head scarp adjacent to the outer edge of the road, undermining SH35 for a length of 15m. Given the slip's proximity to the road, there was a risk of further regression.

  • Reinforced engineered fill slope installation
  • Rock armour-protected face construction
  • Enhanced drainage systems
  • Highway stabilisation and remediation
  • Cyclone Gabrielle damage repair
